A Massachusetts official says a tweet released on the state's official Twitter account that said sexual assault is "avoidable" was an accident and had no malicious intent.
The tweet reading "Sexual assault is always avoidable," was released late Wednesday to mark the end of Sexual Assault Awareness Month.
Advocates said the wording implies that victims are to blame. But executive director at the Boston Area Rape Crisis Center, Gina Scaramella, says she assumes the tweet was a mistake and was intended to read "preventable" not "avoidable."
The director of the website Mass.gov, Geoffrey Kula, tweeted an apology Thursday saying victims are not to blame.
Kula said in a blog post that the tweet skipped the editorial review process and the author of the tweet will be undergoing sexual assault awareness training.
