The Education Department says Tufts University isn’t complying with federal law on addressing campus sexual assault and harassment complaints, though it has made improvements since an investigation began in 2010.

The department said Monday Tufts had signed an agreement with the government April 17 to resolve the issue, then revoked it April 26. Tufts says it signed the agreement after making changes the Education Department asked for, and doesn’t agree it’s still in violation. The investigation followed a written complaint by a Tufts student. Both parties said they hope to resolve the dispute.

The Education Department also confirmed it recently began investigating the handling of sexual assault issues by Harvard’s undergraduate college. Harvard says it takes the issue seriously and has taken several new measures to address it.
