The secretary of the state’s Executive Office of Health and Human Services has planned a news conference to discuss the state child welfare agency.

Secretary John Polanowicz is scheduled to make an announcement Tuesday morning pertaining to the Department of Children and Families.

An agency spokesman would not disclose additional details about the purpose of the news conference.

The commissioner of the Department of Children and Families has been under fire for months since a 5-year-old Fitchburg boy whose family was being monitored by the agency went missing. The boy’s remains were found this month.

Criticism of the commissioner has intensified since two infants in families receiving agency services died this month.

Gov. Deval Patrick has stood by Commissioner Olga Roche.
