We tapped into community news and alternative press this week to look at the news that's been flying under the radar. Among the stories we discussed: did the Boston Cape Verde community flex its political muscle during Tuesday’s special election? Protests about Somerville’s mayor accepting outside funding for a new youth football league, and as states across the country pass laws to make voting more difficult, activists host a hearing in Boston to talk about ways to break down voting barriers.

Evandro Carvalho claimed a decisive victory in Tuesday’s 5th Suffolk District election. It’s a big win for the 32-year-old Cape Verdean who came to the US when he was 15 speaking only Portuguese, and went on to win a scholarship to college and to a stellar career in law. Even though he is a political newcomer, Carvalho is no stranger to the district he now represents. He joined us to talk about his victory and vision for his district.
