In the run-up to Boston's September 24 preliminary mayoral election, which will winnow the field of 12 candidates down to two finalists, WGBH News will be capturing brief snapshots of each would-be mayor on the campaign trail.

Today we start with Mike Ross, the District 8 City Councilor and former Boston City Council president. During a visit to the Geneva Avenue Senior Center in Dorchester, Ross tried to delicately differentiate himself from outgoing Mayor Tom Menino — and dealt with an extremely gregarious audience member in the process.
