From Augusta, Maine to northern Rhode Island, a powerful winter storm is expected to dump 12 to 24 inches of snow to fall beginning Friday and lasting through Saturday afternoon, meteorologist Dave Epstein told Boston Public Radio.

Light snowfall will begin during the day on Friday, but will not grow heavy until the evening. Epstein said he expects only 1-3 inches to fall in the Boston area by sunset. Peak snowfall will be begin around 8 or 9PM Friday and last until around 9AM Saturday morning. By mid-afternoon on Saturday, the snow will taper off, he said.
