Former Red Sox ace Pedro Martinez has returned to the team as a special assistant to general manager Ben Cherington -- the same job as his old catcher, Jason Varitek.
Martinez talked to Greater Boston's Emily Rooney last year after he was honored by "The Tradition," an event at the TD Garden.
"I finally solidified myself as a true Bostonian," Martinez told Greater Boston in June.
Martinez won the Cy Young Award three times, twice during his seven years with the Sox. He shut out the St. Louis Cardinals, pitching seven innings in his last game for the Red Sox, which came in a 4-1, Game 3 win in the 2004 World Series.
Martinez had a 117-37 record with the Sox, and a 2.52 ERA.
