Boston Mayor Thomas Menino announced a series of measures to combat an especially dangerous flus season, a day after declaring a public health emergency.
The city of Boston robo-called 45,000 residents – 27,000 of them senior citizens – urging them to get flu shots at 21 health centers across the city, which are listed below.
“I got my flu shot, and I’m asking every Boston resident over the age of six months to do the same,” Menino said in a statement. “We’re working hard to make it as convenient as possible for residents throughout the city to get vaccinated, at no cost, and I hope to see thousands of Bostonians turn out this weekend at our health centers. It’s the single best thing you can do to protect yourself and your family during this severe flu season.”
So far 700 Boston residents have come down with the flu, 10 times the amount of last year’s entire flu season, according to the city.
The city recommends residents call the Mayor’s Health Line at 617-534-5050, from 9 a.m. to 5p.m., Monday through Friday, or the Mayor’s 24-hour Hotline at 617-635-4500, after hours.
To avoid getting or spreading the flu, the city recommends the following steps:
