The expansion of the Taliban in Afghanistan in recent months has forced hundreds of thousands of people from their homes, causing particular worry for the women and girls whom the militant group regards as second-class citizens. To discuss, Jim Braude was joined on Greater Boston by Razia Jan, founder of Razia’s Ray Of Hope Foundation, which focuses on providing girls with an education; and Beth Murphy, the filmmaker behind the documentary "What Tomorrow Brings" about the school’s efforts and who is planning to return to Afghanistan this fall.

For 15 years, Jan has been helping educate hundreds of girls in Afghanistan. She says she’s hopeful about the future of girls and women there. “They [the Taliban] won’t do what they did 20 years ago to the women — the women won’t stand for that,” she said. “That is the greatest difference. The women — they have a voice. The reason they [the Taliban] are not ruling right now is that there are some powerful women standing for the rights of women."
