Buses, trains and automobiles are at the center of a major debate over the future of a massive transportation project planned in Boston's Allston neighborhood. State officials announced the I-90 Interchange Project in 2014 with the goal of freeing up a swath of land between Boston University and the Charles River to create a new, walkable community. Originally, the plan was to replace the I-90 viaduct, straighten out the road and add a new commuter rail stop called West Station — all at the same time. But last month, MassDOT announced the project wouldn't start until 2020, and the West Station part of the plan would not be built until as late as 2040. State officials say the commuter station delay is for practical reasons, but many residents in the area worry that building for cars first and everyone else later is the wrong way to go.
