In one episode of "The Simpsons," the family's patriarch Homer tells his children: "Kids, you tried your best, and you failed miserably. The lesson is: never try."

That's one lesson you can learn from failure — but it’s not the one professors at Smith College are trying to teach their students.

A new initiative at the school called “Failing Well”is hoping to teach high-achieving kids that flunking a test or getting a B- or getting dumped isn’t just OK — it’s a huge part of learning and growing up.

Paul Reville is a professor at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Education and was formerly the state’s secretary of education. He joined Boston Public Radio for his take on Smith's initaitive — and similar initiatives at universities all over the country — and other education headlines of the day.
