Gov. Charlie Baker said he wants University of Massachusetts President Marty Meehan and the Board of Trustees, which oversee the system’s five campuses, to investigate how UMass Boston found itself with a nearly $30 million budget deficit.
“The big question,” said Baker in an interview at WGBH News’ Dorchester Bureau, “I think a lot of people have is 'how did we get to where we are?’”
Baker continued: “Let’s see what the path looks like and then see what the folks on the ground at UMass Boston are recommending and how the president and how the board react to not just how we got here but what the plan is going forward.”
The trustees are scheduled to meet Tuesday to discuss the budget and the resignation of Boston Chancellor Keith Motley.
