Boston College Law Professor Brian Quinn says whenever there’s a proposed merger in the retail sector of office supply giants such as the one between Staples and Office Depot, a consolidation brings big benefits to stock holders, and it’s a way for businesses to save money.
Quinn, an expert in mergers and acquisitions, says those benefits are just one advantage from a business point-of-view. He’s says a disadvantage for the consumer is having one single retailer in the marketplace means prices for consumers are less competitive.

Quinn says anti-trust opposition has lessoned in recent years due to the increased viability of shopping for office supplies on the internet.
