From October 2004 - September 2008, NCAM researched speech navigation solutions for home media center platforms, which typically rely on complex onscreen menus which are not accessible to people who are blind and are difficult to use for people who have low vision. We created a system called Talking MythTV, a modification of the MythTV open-source media center for Linux. That software is now available for downloading by users with the appropriate hardware and the Ubuntu operating system.

In 2012, programmers in the MythTV community began building other solutions to providing speech access to MythTV. Visit the MythTV wiki for more information.

Project Funding

Funding was provided by a grant from the U.S. Department of Education under grant award #H133G040143. Formally funded project duration: October 2004 - September 2008.
