Earlier this year, foreclosure activity here in the Bay State was surging. And while the latest numbers show things cooled down a bit in June, mortgage lenders still filed more than twelve hundred foreclosure petitions - the first step in the foreclosure process. That is a lot of residents still facing a dire housing situation. And if we’ve learned one thing from the foreclosure crisis that has swept through so many American communities in recent years, it’s that the effects of foreclosures—on families and neighborhoods—go well beyond the financial. 

Marketplace’s Tess Vigeland knows this well, having recently rode along with the LAPD to see for herself how foreclosures were affecting one Los Angeles neighborhood.
