BOSTON (April 25, 2022) – Boston public media producer GBH has been honored with 13 New England Emmy® Award nominations in the lead up to the 45th Annual Boston/New England Emmy® Awards. The nominations are given by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS) Boston/New England Chapter, which is dedicated to the advancement of the arts and sciences of television, the fostering of creative leadership in the television industry, and the encouragement of excellence in artistic, educational, cultural and technical progress.

“I am incredibly proud of the individuals and teams behind each of these projects,” said GBH President and CEO, Jon Abbott. “It is an honor for all of us to be recognized by our media colleagues throughout New England for the impressive programming produced every day at GBH.”

GBH News received recognition for some of its multiplatform journalistic initiatives over the past year. The Big Quit: Why I’m Moving On, an exploration of how people have made big life changes as COVID continues to disrupt their lives, was nominated in the “Serious Feature” category. Two individual installments, “Walking On The Edge Of A Knife” and “Starting Fresh By Turning A Hobby Into A New Business” were nominated in the “Education and Schools News” and “Video Essay” categories respectively. Class of COVID, a documentary which followed three local students' adaptation to learning during COVID, was nominated in the “Education and Schools” category. Stephanie Leydon, director of special projects at GBH News, led the teams working on The Big Quit and Class of COVID. Additionally, Boston’s Race Into History, a deep-dive into the city’s journey to electing its first woman and Asian American mayor, was nominated in the “Politics and Government” category and a relaunch of The Curiosity Desk as a multiplatform weekly video series was nominated in the “Informational and Instructional” category.

The contributions of small production teams and individual employees across GBH were also recognized. The team behind You & Julia: At Home With Amy Traverso was recognized for their informational and instructional content while the team behind GBH News’ TikTok Coverage was also nominated for their reporting. Jared Bowen, GBH’s Executive Arts Editor and the host of Open Studiowith Jared Bowen was nominated in the category of “Writer - Long Form Content” and Robert Fagnant Jr. was nominated in the “Director, Live or Recorded Live” category. On GBH’s Creative team, Elias Mallette was nominated for his graphic arts and art direction work on The Curiosity Desk and Zach Hoban was nominated in the “Graphic Arts - Motion Graphics” category for his work on the GBH Legal IDs. Four nominations were secured by both Emily Judem, a senior producer at GBH News and Joanie Tobin, a senior producer on the Emerging Platforms team, tying them for the most number of nominations by a GBH employee.

The 45th Boston/New England Emmy® Awards Ceremony will be held at the Wang Theatre on Saturday, June 4th, 2022. Tickets to the event will go on sale April 29, 2022.
