Lothian Takes Permanent Role after Serving as Interim Executive Producer

BOSTON (November 15, 2021) – Public media organizations GBH and PRX announced today the appointment of Dan Lothian as executive producer of The World, public radio’s longest-running daily global news program. Lothian assumes the role of executive producer after serving as interim executive producer since March 2021.
“Dan brings a wealth of experience and leadership to The World,” said Jon Abbott, president and CEO of GBH. “Over the past eight months, he has demonstrated his exceptional journalistic skills and deep commitment to the mission of GBH and public media. We’re excited to support the continued development of The World with Dan’s vision and dedication.”

An award-winning journalist, Lothian served at CNN for more than a decade as White House correspondent and as Boston's bureau chief; at NBC News as a correspondent in Los Angeles; at KING-TV in Seattle; and at several other local TV and radio stations. Dan has crossed the map in the U.S. and circled the globe to report on a number of consequential events, including three presidential elections, the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, peace agreements in the Middle East, the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum art heist, and more.

“Dan’s impeccable journalism credentials and his exceptional leadership skills will help us continue to take The World to the next level,” said Kerri Hoffman, CEO of PRX. “His passion for journalism and commitment to sharing global stories with local audiences have helped expand possibilities for The World. We look forward to continuing growth under his leadership.”

The World airs on nearly 300 public radio stations in the U.S. and via the CBC in Canada. The broadcast is heard by more than 2.2 million listeners per week and is also available via theworld.org. A co-production from GBH and PRX, The World launched in 1996 in response to a lack of international news in commercial media. Today, The World remains one of public radio’s most essential programs by providing its listeners with daily access to voices and stories not heard anywhere else through consequential interviews, features, and human-centered journalism focusing on public health, politics and public affairs, security, migration, the environment, and more.

Since joining The World in March, Dan has focused on expanding editorial priorities, adding journalists across the globe while also securing new partnerships with foundations, donors, and stations. Reporter coverage has included traveling to Afghanistan in the weeks leading up to the US’s rapid withdrawal, and to Haiti to report on challenges facing the country, even as news broke that 17 missionaries had been kidnapped. In addition, the show was awarded a 2021 National Edward R. Murrow Award for “excellence in sound” for a report on a refugee camp outside the village of Moria, on the Greek island of Lesbos.

“I’m thrilled to lock in my commitment with the amazing team at The World,” said Lothian. “With the support of GBH and PRX, we will continue to share stories that might help listeners to become more empowered global citizens, reporting not simply on headlines but on the trends and cultural events shaping our world. I’m looking forward to continuing this journey.”
