Last year, Noel "Paul" Stookey, of famed folk trio Peter, Paul and Mary, stopped by the WGBH News for a chat on Boston Public Radio. He discussed legendary folk singer, songwriter and activist Pete Seeger, who died Monday at the age of 94.
The thing I love about Pete is his sense of a balanced life. A lot of people say 'What's he doing living in the boonies up there? He's a Grammy winner.' Well because that is part of the integrity of the human being. He's got a concern for the Hudson, and the whole Clearwater Revival. He still chops his own firewood and carries it into the house. I think there are a lot of lessons we all can learn from that.
We're so busy texting and checking our email and having relationships with maybe a thousand people that we really would better call acquaintances than friends. And maybe we should take a lesson from Pete and just boil it down to the people right around us, yaknow, and be concerned about the town in which we live and those issues that we face as neighbors.
