WGBH's Emily Rooney spoke with Kennedy about the film last fall. Rory, the youngest of Robert F. Kennedy's eleven children, debuted the documentary at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival, anticipating the 40th anniversary of the end of the Vietnam war in 2015.
“I was excited about the prospect of doing a film about the last days in Vietnam, especially in the context of what’s going on today, and as we’re withdrawing from Iraq and Afghanistan and entering into new engagements, wars—it felt particularly pertinent and relevant,” Kennedy said.
Kennedy’s film, produced for WGBH’s American Experience, examines in detail how the U.S. left Saigon as the Vietnam war came to a close and it presents the soldiers who challenged military authority to save many lives. The film premiered at the 2014 Sundance film festival and is nominated for numerous awards.
