Last week, we learned that Sister Julienne’s plan to save Nonnatus through privatization was an unfortunate bust. Back to the drawing board!

Remember how I thought last week was unusually grim, even for Call The Midwife? Episode 2 is shaping up to be no different, starting with the Nonnatus crew reacting to news of the Moors Murders, a horribly upsetting true crime story that Americans may not know (it involves a couple who murdered and sexually assaulted five children, which explains why all of our midwife friends are so righteously furious). The episode also starts with a family, the Clarkes, getting evicted while a crowd boos their landlord, so it seems that the housing crisis in Poplar is only getting worse.

Now where were we? Last season, Nonnatus house’s budget cut/rent hike was briefly reversed, and we dealt with addiction, death and a whole bunch of babies. This season starts on a hopeful note, as Sister Monica Joan gets back up on her feet and walks, creakily, down the hall. Across town, Vi bustles into her store and greets Fred with a typical honey-do list: go get Easter candy at lunch!

I’ll be honest with you, reader: when we first started Guilt, I was half convinced it couldn’t possibly sustain four whole episodes. How, for instance, could Cheekbones and Softie possibly maintain their charade long enough? Clearly, I was mistaken, and this thing has now gotten so deliciously convoluted I’m starting to wonder how it’ll all get wrapped up in this final episode.

Now where were we? Last time, we found out that L’Americain might just not be who she said she is after all (and is, at minimum, in cahoots with Rear Window), that Cheekbones is in deep with a loan shark, that there really are limits to how much of her husband’s crap Long-Suffering Lady Cheekbones is willing to put up with, and that Softie both lives up to his name AND might be more savvy than any of us thought.

Last time on Guilt, the brothers Softie and Cheekbones committed vehicular homicide, covered it up and then just started digging a metaphorical hole so deep they’re now almost certainly unable to get out unassisted. What bad idea will they try this week? Only one way to find out: on with the show!

Guilt opens up with some '80s synth accompanying a car driving on a nearly empty freeway, or whatever they call them over there in the U.K. — her majesty’s roadway? I’m not googling it. I’ll say it now: if those vibes don’t sound immaculate to YOU, we might not get along.

Are you ready? Are your metaphorical seatbelts fastened? Good, because as much as I think we’d all like to go back in time to 30 seconds before last week’s episode ended, Unforgotten must go on, and so must we. As you might expect, this week starts with a shot of a horrified Sunny sprinting into the hospital, where I very much hope he’ll discover that Cassie is banged up but otherwise fine. He cuts the line at the reception desk, and once updated, gets the horrible task of calling Cassie’s kid to tell him what happened, and that he better head to the hospital.

Last week, we finally found out what did Matt the Victim in: a very huge spike in the head. But are we looking at murder, or an accident? Only one way to know for sure, and that’s to get more info. Luckily, we have Cassie and Sunny (and the rest of the squad) on the case.

We’ve got a body. We’ve got a bunch of potential suspects all acting kinda fishy. We’ve got a witness who can confirm that our victim Matt was being chased the last time he was seen alive. Things are looking up for ol’ Cassie! Well… sort of. Whilst the detective side of things is humming along nicely, her attempt to use her son to spy on her dad isn’t going that well.
