Taped by the WGBH Forum Network, historian Richard Smith (or rather, naturalist author Henry David Thoreau) visited the Old South Meeting House to discuss the life, work, and philosophy of the Concord, Massachusetts native.

Smith’s portrayal, both in lecture and in interactions with patrons, reflects the common perception of Thoreau as a thoughtful hermit, rejecting societal patterns and embracing nature at its wildest. The four years he spent at Harvard College were a waste of time; the four daily hours he spent sauntering in the woods were infinitely more meaningful.
