Even though Massachusetts voters have an established affinity for electing Republicans as governor, a mass of polling suggests that this year's GOP nominee, former state Rep. Geoff Diehl, is about to lose big to Democratic Attorney General Maura Healey.

So why has Diehl doggedly stuck with a message that seems deeply out of step with what Massachusetts voters actually want? And if Diehl's strategy and execution suggest he's not actually that interested in getting the job, what's he aiming for instead?

In this episode of Talking Politics, host Adam Reilly deconstructs Diehl's campaign with the Boston Globe's Emma Platoff and UMass Amherst political scientist Tatishe Nteta.

First, Reilly is joined by GBH News' Peter Kadzis and Katie Lannan to puzzle out what prompted Vice President Kamala Harris' recent campaign stop in Massachusetts and the surreal, dismaying spectacle of one Boston city councilor accusing another of effectively bringing the Troubles to Boston City Hall.
