Darwin supposed survival of the fittest, but did he ever consider survival of the cutest? Scientists are now are now saying dogs evolved to have cute eyes so humans would continue to take care of them.

Boston Globe columnist Alex Beam joined Boston Public Radio Wednesday to explain this new revelation in evolutionary biology.

"The muscles around their eyelids have changed evolutionary to open them up and make them wider, giving them that, quote, 'Adopt me' look," Beam said.

Beam was fascinated by how much the dog species evolved in 33,000 years, which got him thinking about how much humans must have evolved in that same time

"I guess 33,000 years ago, we were killing saber tooth tigers," he said. "We've probably had a lot of interesting adaptations as well."
