Because of the monumental damage drinking straws do to the environment, the New York City Council is introducing a bill to that would outlaw drinking straws from its eateries, and now the European Union is considering banning them too. We asked food writer and senior Atlantic editor Corby Kummer — will plastic drinking straws soon be a thing of the past?
The European Union said its proposal to ban plastic products when alternatives exist will seek to eliminate marine litter in half, avoiding an estimated $250 billion over the next 12 years.
