Homeland security expert Juliette Kayyem spoke with Boston Public Radio on Friday about life post-coronavirus and after social distancing.
"All this talk about opening back up the country, well, what are we opening up to?" she said. "In crisis management, generally, you have the bad event, the response, the response ends, and then you have recovery, but here we're going to have a recovery with a response."
How we handle a phase that simultaneously includes a recovery and response is critical, Kayyem noted. "I'm calling it adaptive recovery, because I think every day is going to be different, it's not a typical recovery," she said. "As we start to shed social distancing, we're going to prioritize the things that do get the engines running, and we're all going to make our own personal calculation about the risk."
Kayyem is an analyst for CNN, former assistant secretary at the Department of Homeland Security and faculty chair of the homeland security program at Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government.
