National security expert Juliette Kayyem condemned President Trump’s “zero tolerance” policy on Boston Public Radio Wednesday and said that the children taken away from their families at the border “may never see their parents again.”

Since early May, more than 2,300 children have been separated from their families on the southern border as part of Trump’s “zero tolerance policy,” according to the Department of Homeland Security. Attorney General Jeff Sessions has suggested that this tactic is being employed to deter families who are considering crossing the border illegally.

“I hope people will get the message and come through the border at the port of entry and not break across the border unlawfully,” Sessions told Laura Ingraham on Fox News Monday.

In response to the mounting public and political pressure , Trump told reporters today that he would be signing something later that would help keep families together. He did not elaborate on what exactly he would be sign.

“This is a horror of the president's own making," said Kayyem. "Why are we deporting parents without their kids? I don’t understand that. There is no legitimate reason for that.”

Kayyem also told Boston Public Radio that there is nothing that Trump can sign that will remedy the harm he has already caused to children and their families.

“It is not over by signing a document. There are at least 2,000 children that are not with their parents. Not only was there not a plan for what this was going to look like, and what it would entail, and how you are going to care for children, there is no plan for reunification,” she said.
