Another fire on the MBTA disrupted service for Boston commuters this morning.

Transit agency officials said a small fire broke out beneath a Red Line car just before 6 a.m. The operator saw smoke and stopped the train at the Charles/MGH station.

Firefighters had to carry buckets of water and fire extinguishers up the stairs of the station to put out the fire because the emergency water supply system was not working properly.

All passengers evacuated the train. No injuries were reported.

"Vehicle maintenance is currently investigating and we'll provide an update once that investigation is more complete," Ron Ester, the agency's chief safety officer, said at the start of a regularly scheduled MBTA meeting today.

The MBTA resumed Red Line service and reopened the Charles/MGH station after a two-hour shutdown.
