Boston-area commuters will soon learn how much more it's going to cost to use public transit.
The fiscal control board that oversees the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority is expected to decide Monday on whether and by how much to raise fares on the system.
Proposed increases have ranged from 5 percent to nearly 10 percent.
MBTA officials say the hikes are needed as the system struggles with annual operating deficits and an estimated $7.3 billion backlog of deferred maintenance.
Many riders argued at a recent series of public hearings the T should not ask customers to pay more until service improves. Others asked that any increase be held to no more than 5 percent.
T officials have recently reported progress in cutting overtime and other administrative costs.
