Boston Mayor Marty Walsh said his office is keeping a close watch on properties that rent to college students as the city prepare for the annual influx of college students returning to Boston.

From Friday to Monday more than 50 housing inspectors will hit the sidewalks of Allston, Brighton, Fenway and Mission Hill, executing on-the-spot safety inspections for those renters who request them.

This comes as the Mayor's office is encouraging colleges and universities to have more students living on campus and free up Boston's housing stock.

In a statement on Wednesday, Walsh said his plan will make move-in weekend go more smoothly.

Landlords who rent to college kids in Boston's student-heavy neighborhoods should expect housing and trash inspections over the weekend
