Rhode Island will no longer honor federal immigration detainers unless they are accompanied by a warrant, under a new policy put into place by Gov. Lincoln Chafee.

Thursday's change comes a day after Chafee had ordered a policy that immigrant rights' advocates said could still allow people's constitutional rights to be violated.

In February, a federal judge in Rhode Island determined a U.S. citizen's constitutional rights were violated when she was held on an immigration detainer. He approved her lawsuit against the Department of Corrections and ICE.

Other judges have since made similar rulings. Many law enforcement agencies now require a warrant for detainers.

The policy announced Wednesday would have honored detainers if removal proceedings had already begun, and did not require a warrant.

The reason for Thursday's change was not immediately clear.
