Since police officers shot and killed Boston resident Juston Root in February following a chaotic series of events, more information has surfaced — in the form of radio transmissions, body camera footage, and documents — that his family says points to excessive use of force by law enforcement and, ultimately, the preventable death of their loved one. Root, who was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and schizoaffective disorder as a young adult, was experiencing a mental health episode at the time, which the family says also raises questions about the way police officers understand and interact with people living with mental illness.
