It was a day of celebration at City Hall Plaza on Wednesday as the Boston City Council welcomed members of the Boston Renegades following their Women's Football Alliance Division I national championship win.

In July, the Renegades took down the Cali War 52-24 to take home the title, complete a perfect season and win its second straight title in the WFA, which bills itself as the premier women's football league.

Boston City Councilor Josh Zakim hosted the event and Red Sox mascot Wally was on sight to help the team raise their flag over the plaza.

"This is exciting and something that has become a bit of a tradition in celebrating the Boston Renegades, and a tradition of championships and excellence," Zakim said.

He noted how the team's victory coincided with the recent championships from the Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots.

Councilor At-Large Althea Garrison and Councilor Ed Flynn were also on hand.

"I want to say thank you to the ... Renegades," Flynn said. "It's an outstanding club. You do so much work, and also promoting the sport [and] ensuring that our young girls also have the opportunity to learn and to play. So what you're doing is incredible to the young people of our city."

"We have countless fans tell us about how they've learned about our existence through public events such as this," Wide receiver and team captain Stephanie Pascual said. "Those fans, especially the young ones, now get to see another example of women breaking barriers and living their dreams."

She was also confident that the team would be making another trip to City Hall next year.

"We cannot wait to do this again next year when we bring home the 2020 trophy," Pascual said.
