The son of a former mayor will join the Boston City Council next year.
Former probation officer Edward Flynn defeated Bay Village resident and LGBTQ activist Mike Kelley by more than three percentage points to win the seat being vacated by retiring Councilor Bill Linehan of South Boston.
In a statement made after declaring victory over Kelley, Flynn said his success was a win for Bostonians who voted to unify the district.
Flynn listed schools, addiction services, housing and the transit system as priorities he hopes to work on.
Flynn, the son of former mayor and vatican ambassador Ray Flynn, is a Navy veteran and former Suffolk County probation officer.
Even with his victory over Kelley, Flynn's campaign may still pursue legal action against Kelley's campaign for allegedly coercing Chinese-American voters to file fraudulent absentee ballots.
District two includes South Boston and the Seaport, the South End, downtown, Chinatown and Bay Village.
