Amazon announced last Friday morning that they would be acquiring the grocery store behemoth, Whole Foods, for $13.7 billion

Amazon’s biggest acquisition to date gives the online retail empire all 431 brick-and-mortar Whole Food stores across the country. Now, with the reach and expertise of this grocery chain behind them, Amazon is primed and ready to take over your refrigerator.

Harvard Business School historian Nancy Koehn joined Boston Public Radio to discuss the future of Amazon and how they are planning to disrupt the grocery store industry.

Koehn believes this was a smart move for Amazon and gives the company an opportunity for unprecedented expansion.

“They are close to your house now,” Koehn said. “If they want to turn some of these stores into distribution centers for their already burgeoning grocery business, this is a great way to do it. It is much harder to sell organic tomatoes on the Internet than it is to sell at Whole Foods.”
