The 200th anniversary of Jane Austen's death will be on July 18th. Despite having died 200 years ago, Austen continues to be relevant with readers ranging from young women fantasizing about Regency romances to alt-right figures like Milo Yiannopoulos. The Chronicle of Higher Education published an article on March 12th titled “Alt-Right Jane Austen” which outlines how members of the alt-right are subverting Austen's words to align with their dreams of a white ethno-state. Jane Austen fans, otherwise known as Janeites, are up in arms about the misappropriation of their literary hero. Harvard Business School historian and self-proclaimed Janeite Nancy Koehn joined Boston Public Radio Tuesday to discuss Austen's legacy and why her writing is emphatically not alt-right.
