Pam Johnston

General Manager for News

Pam Johnston is GBH’s General Manager for News with responsibility for GBH’s integrated news operations across all platforms including radio, TV and digital. She oversees radio stations GBH 89.7 in Boston and CAI on the Cape and Islands, and a news bureau in Worcester. Programs under her supervision include the local productions Boston Public Radio on 89.7, Greater Boston, Basic Black and Talking Politics on TV, as well as GBH’s Morning Edition and All Things Considered from NPR.

Johnston joined GBH in 2012 as Director of Audience Development for the investigative documentary series FRONTLINE, and in 2018 was promoted to Senior Director of Strategy & Audience. She expanded the reach of FRONTLINE’s journalism across platforms, increasing the series’ engagement with new and more diverse audiences in existing and emerging formats, including long-form documentaries, digital-first original journalism, interactives, virtual reality experiences and podcasts.

Prior to GBH, Johnston served as News Director at Boston’s WLVI-TV and had earlier news experience as a producer at WRAL in Raleigh, NC and WMTW in Portland, Maine. She also served in leadership roles at Lahey Health and the start-up social media company Gather.com. She has earned Emmy, Peabody, du-Pont Columbia and Webby Awards, and was named one of Boston Magazine’s Top 10 Most Powerful Women. She holds a BS degree from Syracuse University.
