Launchpad is a studio at WGBH that develops digital television series for social media platforms. Our process means we're producing and distributing pilots and short series on a monthly schedule, built from a combination of new data science and an investment in artists.
Launchpad is currently focused on formats related to science media and aims to reach and inform a diversity of audiences.
New Platforms: People are spending more time with their screens—in fact, 30 minutes more per day than a year ago—and they're watching video on platforms like Instagram, Snapchat and YouTube. We're making content for our audiences where they'll watch it.
Animation: Social media platforms are becoming more and more animated. Motion graphics, 3D animation, Animated GIFs and augmented reality are major contributors to the new aesthetic of social video.
Science: Fact overload—what we're calling "factsplaining"—is a turn-off. It's why we watch television and not PowerPoint presentations. Only 36% of Americans seek out science news, but 81% consume science entertainment. That creates an opportunity to entertain and excite audiences about things that matter.
Investing in Creators: Yes, we are using data to understand the rapid changes happening in the way we watch video, but we believe in great stories and great characters, too. And that requires human creativity. We're investing in creators who inspire.
Diverse Makers: The stories we tell and how we tell them influence our shared futures. Despite the democratization of media, creators on digital platforms are less diverse than those on traditional media. We are focused on working with diverse creators to reach a broad audience.
The Launchpad Creative Resident program brings media innovators inside WGBH to work on developing, producing and publishing digital television programs alongside WGBH producers, experts and mentors. For each of Launchpad’s Fall 2018 cycles, we will select up to 5 Creative Residents to receive a $2,000 stipend to work on new programs for a duration of 3 weeks.
For the Fall 2018 cycles, we are seeking creators with expertise in animation, which could include 2D cartoons, animated GIFs, 3D animation, motion graphics, game engine filmmaking or augmented reality.
