The Tom Turkey on today's mural may be giving thanks for being able to frolic freely in the field. Commonly traced to a 1621 feast in nearby Plimoth, Thanksgiving has roots dating back to harvest festivals and religious days of fasting that the Pilgrims brought over from Europe, along with ritual expressions of thanks for nature’s bounty by the indigenous people of the land.

Today, Americans strive to put aside their differences and pause to reflect on their good fortune, no matter the measure, and share what they can with those in need. WGBH wishes everyone the warmth of family and friendship, and the security of health and home.
