Back in 1963, Peter Schumann was doing what a lot of artists in New York City were doing: responding to an incredibly turbulent time in America by fighting for causes he believed in through art. Bob Dylan wrote and performed Blowing in the Wind. Merce Cunningham and John Cage staged happenings. But Schumann—a German-born sculptor and dancer who’d been living in New York for only a few years—made puppets, baked bread and put on shows.
50 years later the company he founded that year, aptly called Bread and Puppet , is still making puppets, still baking bread and still fighting to change the world. And Schumann is still at the helm! He joined us on Boston Public Radio ahead of a series of Bread & Puppet shows, January 24-27, at the Cyclorama in the South End .
