Historically, debate was only practiced academically by the privileged few, leaving many people of color dramatically underrepresented. However, many African American speakers have delivered important speeches, from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to Malcolm X, to Barbara Jordan to Barack Obama. We discuss students of color joining debate teams in their communities to use their voices for change.
