  • Patience — starring Ella Maisy Purvis — concluded its first season on PBS on Sunday with the title character facing the dual fears of anthrax exposure and the possibility of going on a first date. The good news for Patience fans is that UK Channel 4 has already given Season 2 the green light. The bad news is that it won’t premiere on PBS for at least a year. In the meantime, BritBox’s Code of Silence mixes some of the best elements of Patience with a hint of the thriller genre.
  • Cyril’s story on Call The Midwife shares some parallels with Alphy on Grantchester, even though the series is set a decade apart. Both are men in church leadership. They both have to consider their future wife’s role in their religious career. Neither can afford to have the public perception that they’re engaging in morally questionable behavior. Alphy has already had a scrape with a love interest who was involved in illegal and unethical activity. Cyril’s divorce shares a similar space, emphasizing the need to proceed with caution. But the clearest parallel is that both Cyril and Alphy pursue interracial relationships because they feel natural attraction and chemistry with women they’ve met by chance.
  • As drama fans, it’s honestly kind of wild that we are just now talking about The Gilded Age for the first time. And yet, here we are. Season 3 is currently airing, and now that we’ve reached the midpoint (and an episode with some MAJOR plot developments, which yes, we will be discussing; spoilers ahead) it’s time for GBH Drama to talk over everything that’s happened so far this season: the good, the bad, and the dramatic.
  • Jane Austen fans around the world have been celebrating the 250th Anniversary of her birth with a wide variety of festivals, conferences, conventions, and other activities. Her novels and her life continue to inspire novelists alongside television and film creatives. Some of these stories are set in the Regency era while others speak to her relevance in today’s world.
  • BritBox’s newest period drama, Outrageous, portrays the true story of how the turbulent politics of the 1930s simultaneously tore a family apart and also forged their desire to rebel against their upper-class sheltered background. GBH Drama interviewed Bessie Carter, who portrays oldest sister Nancy Mitford.
  • BritBox’s newest drama Outrageous combines the traditional family saga period drama format with an historical and political analysis of biographical and issues. You may have heard of the Mitford Sisters — whether through their published works, their marriages, or their politics — but this is the first time a series has chronicled all of their lives. GBH Drama interviewed screenwriter Sarah Williams and Executive Producer Matthew Mosley on how they brought the turbulent 1930s to life.
  • Poldark has ridden off into the sunset, but it has left an indelible legacy in the history of MASTERPIECE.
  • Well, somehow we’re here at the final episode of season 14, which features two weddings, many returning characters, and one big surprise.
  • Harry Wild is an Irish twist on the amateur detective trope most recently showcased by MASTERPIECE in The Marlow Murder Club and Magpie Murders/Moonflower Murders. Jane Seymour stars as the titular character Harriet “Harry” Wild, a retired English professor from Dublin who turns sleuth when she has a run-in with a local teenager, Fergus (Rohan Nedd). GBH Drama interviewed Jane Seymour to discuss what fans can expect from Season 4, how Harry rebels against ageism, and teasers for future episodes.
  • Just as it’s starting to get hot here in Boston, the autumn chill is coming on in Poplar. Our friends keep busy with work, family games, and car repairs (just Phyllis’ luck: first day back, and her tire springs a leak). But the biggest piece of news is that a date has been set for Joyce’s disciplinary hearing: the powers that be have upheld Bernie’s complaint, so now Joyce has to defend herself against a charge of misconduct and disobedience. Thankfully, she’s got all of Nonnatus backing her, but this will still probably be a fairly wretched experience.
