Lillian Ross has been a staff writer at *The New Yorker* since 1945. She is noted for her pioneering work in "new journalism" in the 1950s, and is the author of several books, including *Picture*, her account of the 1950 making of the film version of *The Red Badge of Courage*; and *Portrait of Hemingway*, about the Nobel prize-winning novelist.
