Dr. Richard Haass

President, Council on Foreign Relations

Dr. Richard Haass has headed the Council on Foreign Relations since 2003. Prior to that he served as the senior Middle East Advisor to President H. W. Bush and as the director of the Policy Planning Staff at the State Department under Colin Powell. He succeeded Senator George Mitchell as U.S. Special Envoy for Northern Ireland, and was Vice President of the Brookings Institution. A recipient of the Presidential Citizens Medal, the State Department’s Distinguished Honor Award, and the Tipperary International Peace Award, he is also the author or editor of fourteen books.
