The race to replace acting Mayor Kim Janey's council seat may now be bound for a recount.

City Council Candidate Angelina “Angie” Camacho submitted a petition to Boston’s Election Department for a recount in the District 7 race. The seat, which encompasses parts of Roxbury, the South End and Fenway, is currently occupied by Acting Mayor Kim Janey, who took the city reins after former Mayor Marty Walsh departed for the Biden administration. Janey is not seeking re-election.

Camacho, a public health worker, finished in third place last Tuesday night behind Tania Fernandes Anderson, who captured 26% of the vote, and perennial candidate Roy Owens Sr., who captured 17% of the vote.

According to the city’s unofficial results, 8,522 ballots were cast in the race. Only 28 votes separated Camacho and Owens.

“Given such a small margin, we owe it to our supporters, friends, and the community to make sure that every ballot is counted and every voice has been heard,” Camacho said in a statement. “It is also an opportunity for our fellow candidates to know that the process has been counted accurately.”

The signatures, Camacho’s campaign manager said, will be certified or rejected by the city’s Election Department within the coming days.

Neither Owens nor the Election Department was available for comment Monday night.

Anderson, executive director of the Bowdoin Geneva Main Streets, said through a spokesperson that she would embrace a recount.

“Tania is committed to running her campaign in this next phase as we head into the general with the same vigor that she had going into the primary,” said Jacquetta Van Zandt, a volunteer consultant with the campaign. “She is focused on the people of District 7 and welcomes any competition from the other candidates.”
