On Monday, Sen. Cory Booker announced that he is ending his presidential campaign. During Boston Public Radio’s weekly politics round table, Charlie Chieppo and Shannon O’Brien agreed that the 2020 political climate was not the right time for the New Jersey senator.
“I think this year may not be the right political dynamic for him, but he’s young and I think we’re going to hear a lot from him going forward,” Chieppo said.
O’Brien said Booker’s dropping out is indicative of the importance money will play in the 2020 race and that while it is not a new problem, Booker’s candidacy demonstrates the uphill battle candidates with limited funds are facing.
“Obviously there will be some consternation that one more candidate of color could no longer continue in the Democratic field and it also underlines how important money continues to be in this race and in all other races, but that’s not anything new,” O’Brien said.
O’Brien is a former Massachusetts state treasurer and Democratic nominee for governor. Chieppo is the principal of Chieppo Strategies, a senior fellow at the Pioneer Institute and an adjunct professor at Suffolk University
