When a major tragedy strikes, like a terrorist attack or an oil spill, the next step after helping with the immediate crisis is usually to provide victims and their families with some kind of financial restitution.
For example, after September 11, the federal government set up a victim compensation fund, and after the Boston Marathon Bombing, city, state and local leaders set up the One Fund. Attorney Kenneth Feinberg was the man making the decisions in both cases – and many more – about how much each person should get and how it should be disbursed. He is also the author of ‘Who Gets What,’ and the subject of a documentary, ‘Playing God,’ both of which examine how he made such weighty decisions. Jim Braude was joined by Kenneth Feinberg.
