It was a comment that raised eyebrows and a fair amount of ire. On Saturday, former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright suggested that women who back Bernie Sanders are traitors to their gender. Or, as she put it at a Hillary Clinton rally in Concord, NH: “There’s a special place in hell for women who don’t help each other!”

But today in Nashua, Albright insisted her statement had been misconstrued.

When Boston Globe op-ed columnist Joan Vennocchi began asking Albright about her comments after Albright addressed volunteers before a Clinton canvass — saying, “I think you said there’s a special place in hell for women who don’t go with the female candidate” —Albright interjected: “No, I didn’t say that.”

"People have to make up their own minds."

All of which sounds, of course, like another way of saying that there’s a special place in hell for women who don’t support Clinton. So I pressed Albright: is there a special place in hell for women who back Bernie Sanders?

“No,” she told me. “I think that people have to make up their minds about what they want.”

So rest easy, Women for Bernie. Your political damnation may not be guaranteed.
