First lady Michelle Obama is making a political visit to New England on behalf of Democrats running for governor in Massachusetts and Maine.
Obama's first stop on Friday will be the Strand Theatre in Boston's Dorchester neighborhood, where she is scheduled to highlight a rally for state Attorney General Martha Coakley.
Polling indicates Coakley is locked in a tight race with Republican Charlie Baker, a former health insurance executive. Incumbent Democratic Gov. Deval Patrick is not seeking re-election.
Coakley's campaign has focused heavily on appealing to women voters who make up more than half of the state's electorate.
The first lady later is scheduled to attend a rally at the University of Maine in Orono for Democratic congressman Mike Michaud, who is challenging Republican Gov. Paul LePage.
