Reports of extreme stress, anxiety, depression and other mental health conditions have significantly increased among doctors and nurses since the COVID-19 pandemic began. The issue gained particular attention in April, when Dr. Lorna Breen died by suicide after treating emergency room patients in New York during the city’s surge and experiencing COVID-19 symptoms herself. Breen’s brother-in-law, Corey Feist, and Dr. Beth Lown of Harvard Medical School and the Schwartz Center for Compassionate Healthcare joined Jim Braude to tell Dr. Breen’s story and discuss the need for stronger support systems for healthcare workers.
