Like cable news, local media in Houston, Texas delivered wall-to-wall coverage of Friday’s deadly shooting at Santa Fe High School.
But KHOU, a local affiliate, offered a different approach to sorting out faction from fiction.
While reporting on the shooting, the station implemented Verify – a regular segment aimed at combating fake news stories and separating truth from rumor. In Using a touch-screen monitor a reporter sorted out into three different columns what they were able to confirm, what tips they were investigating and what was just plain false information.
On Beat the Press, Emily Rooney, and the panel – Dan Kennedy of Northeastern University, Callie Crossley of WGBH News, Adam Reilly of WGBH News, and Lylah Alphonse of U.S. News and World Report – discussed the station’s approach to fact-checking.
